Zero Waste Self Care
January 29, 2019With both the zero waste movement and self care taking off recently, it's no surprise that they share a following, or that in this time where people are changing the way they treat both the planet and themselves that they've gained popularity so quickly.
Self care, for me and many others has become an integral part of our day to day lives, it can be as simple as a mug of tea and good book at bed time or making sure you take time out of your day to breathe in some fresh air.
However you view self care, remember it'll be there whenever you need it, like a warm hug.
I have to confess to not being very good at zero waste, I find I get too easily overwhelmed by trying to do it all at once, so if you're like me, here are some zero and low waste ideas to try out!
Pick out a couple, give them a go and if they don't vibe with you, that's okay, just move on and try something else until you find what works.
Exercise
- Any exercise is good, but if you can make it include fresh air then you're onto a winner, things like going for a walk (or a run if that's more your speed), heading out on a hike or just doing some gardening when the weather is nice are all great ideas.
- Do whatever makes you feel good, if that's swimming in the local lake or putting on some cheesy 80's music and having a dance, just go with it.
Zero waste tip: Yoga is a great zero waste practice because you can do it with virtually no equipment, all you really need is some comfy clothes and a video to follow (and some hot tea won't go amiss).
Mindful Care
- I've always found that one of the best things when you're in a rut or just feel like you need a bit of extra tlc is a hot shower or long soak in the tub. Take some time to dry brush, use a face mask, stretch your muscles or light some candles and relax, whatever takes your fancy.
- You could play some relaxing music or stick on your favourite tunes and use your best shower singing voice!
Zero waste tip: Create a homemade face mask with two parts cocoa powder, one part honey (or your preferred vegan alternative) and one part yoghurt.
Self care is subjective, it's about doing what makes you feel good, not what someone else says will make you feel good, so if something doesn't sound appealing to you, that's A-okay.
Focus on doing the things that make your soul shine; watch sunsets, eat chocolate, read books, paint, bake cookies or cuddle your pet!
Zero waste tip: You and your body will always function better on plenty of sleep and lots of water! To help make sure you're drinking enough why not try out the Tree Tribe Eco Bottles!
