How to Clean and Care for Your Stainless Steel Water Bottle
October 12, 2018If you bought one of our Eco Bottles, congratulations it's guaranteed for life!
It's easy to clean and care for, here are some guidelines to keep your bottle fresh.
Brand New Bottle
Our bottles are made with food-grade 18/8 stainless steel, which makes them safe and rust resistant.
You'll want to wash your bottle before using it:
- Fill er up with warm/hot water and soap and screw the cap on.
- Give it a few shakes then let it sit for a couple minutes.
- Rinse it out and let air dry.
Tastes Like Metal?
Usually a quick soap rinse is all you need to clean your bottle for the first time.
If you're new to stainless steel bottles, or just used to drinking out of plastic, you might notice a perceived "metallic taste" when your bottle is brand new.
This depends on the person, but if you're feeling like it has a strong smell/taste after you've washed it, there's a level 2 cleaning method you can use: baking soda. Just rinse 1 teaspoon with some soap and water, give it a light shake and let it sit for a couple hours, then rinse.
If you don't have baking soda, you can try a teaspoon of vinegar mixed with water. Then soak and rinse with soap and water after.
If it still bothers you, contact us and we can either replace or refund for you.
What is Stainless Steel Exactly?
Steel that contains chromium becomes "stainless", because of chromium's ability to prevent oxidation and rust.
Our bottles are made with 18/8 stainless steel, which is 18% chromium, 8% nickel and 74% iron. This is a common type of stainless steel used in bottles and kitchenware.
Our bottles are all 18/8 stainless steel inside and 18/10 stainless steel outside. The colored bottles are have an extra layer of powder coating on the outside.
Drinking Water
If you're just drinking water out of your bottle, you barely even have to clean it. I regularly go weeks without cleaning my bottle, other than a quick wash of the mouth part every week or so.
The only time I'll use a soap and water rinse is if I had some veggie juice or tea/coffee in the bottle.
Smoothies and Juice
Since these are insulated, taking a fresh juice or smoothie for the road is pretty common. Throw some ice in and your juice will stay cold all day.
Definitely want to rinse your bottle out as soon as you're done though.
The bottles are super easy to clean, usually a water rinse will do it, but if you leave smoothie/juice in it you're probably going to have to use a brush to clean it perfectly... or the easy way let it soak with soap and water overnight.
What Else Can you Drink?
Any drinkable liquid. Here's a list of things I use mine for:
- Water
- Veggie juice (my secret recipe is beets + kale + a dash of tumeric + cinnamon)
- Wine
- Workout drank (aminos, energy, etc)
- Smoothies
- Tea
- Beer (fun to pour in really cold then take it for a walk :D)
- Yerba mate
- Coffee (works great as a thermos to share with friends)
- Iced coffee (yes!)
Carbonated beverages should be fine, just be careful when opening the lid.
A Note About Dishwashers
Our bottles clean very easily, so there's no need for a dishwasher. And some dishwashers are crazy hot!
With the insulated design, there is a vacuum sealed hollow pocket in between the inner and outer walls of the bottle. It's probably OK to use in most dishwashers, but there is a chance it could damage the bottle and make the insulation a little weaker.
I probably wouldn't put the cap in the dishwasher, this would likely damage the bamboo top and the silicon gasket.
Dents and Scratches
Under normal use your bottle should last forever. You might pick up some scratches and small dings along the way, but I think these battle scars are cool, they add character :)
The colored bottles are powder coated so they're pretty resistant to scratches, but still scuffles with rocks or metal are likely going to scratch it.
We've heard stories like people dropping their bottle off a 2nd story building onto the concrete, coming out with no dents... and we've also heard stories of people dropping a few feet and causing a ding. They're built super rugged but at the right angle of a drop you might get a little ding or a dent.
Lifetime Guarantee
We created our bottles to be the most durable on the planet, so we slapped the lifetime guarantee on them.
One of the main reasons we made these bottles is to create an eco friendly product and help make the Earth a little more healthy.
If your bottle is dented up and/or not working right, just contact us and we'll set you up with a brand new one. Before replacing because of dents, consider if it negatively affects your bottle, or just looks worn in. It's up to you whether to replace or not.
Scratch Philosophy
The warranty doesn't cover scratches, these are normal and will happen along way during your travels.
If scratches bother you, consider the Japanese philosophy wabi-sabi - appreciating the beauty of imperfection. Then think about nature and its imperfect beauty... the scratches tell a story, the story of our journey through life.
Enjoy the adventure!
