Where Your Trees are Planted Part 2 - Eden Projects
July 26, 2016Our second tree planting partner is Eden Reforestation Projects. They have planted over 125,000,000 trees in 4 countries!
We've been with them a few months now, it started with wanting to add a new partner and plant extra trees for Earth Day!. They have various planting initiatives, but also rely strongly on the agro-forestry method that we like so much (trees + food + resources).
They plant trees because "Environmental destruction, through radical deforestation, is a major cause of extreme poverty in third world nations and a likely cause behind the climate change crisis."
Nepal, Haiti, Madagascar, and Ethiopa are the 4 countries that Eden Projects focuses their work in. Here's why:
- 98% of Ethiopia's forest areas have been destroyed in the last 50 years
- Only 10% of Madagascar's orginal forests remain today
- Only 2% of Haiti's total land is forested
- Nepal is one of the poorest and least developed countries in the world and rural villagers directly depend on their natural environment for food, shelter, and income
Eden Project's model is to hire locals to plant the trees, which helps to alleviate extreme poverty in the short term, while the growth of the forests helps secure a future of resources.
We got creative with them recently and hosted an Instagram contest to donate 500 trees to each of the 4 countries they work with. The trees were planted on behalf of the 4 winners from the contest. Check out the winners here. This was fun and we appreciate the collective effort of the Tribe!
